This may not be new to you but it was a new one to me.

I was just going through the spam filter on my blog when I came across a comment that started to get me a little angry. It was insulting and I think it would get a rouse out of just about anyone. However, I think this comment was counting on exactly that emotional decision to help and get the comment approved on my site.

The Comment

Wow! I mean just WOW!

Someone seriously had it out to berate, insult and just be downright mean in that comment. So, you can see why I was getting a little worked up over it. Some serious Bitchassness going on in that comment

The Author

Triple WOW. This comment wasn’t from a human who was hatin’ on me it was clearly from a spammer. All I had to do is check out the name and URL, no rocket science necessary.

Comment Spammers New Tactic

Like everyone who runs a blog you get about a dozen or more of the spam comments praising your glorious site to the high heavens for its complete awesomeness.

Now, it looks like the spammers are taking to a new tactic. Instead of playing nicely and trying to feed your ego, they are getting a little toothy, trying to take a bite out of you, and get there comments approved out of sheer emotional reaction to negativity.

In all honesty, the comment text had me. I was ready to approve that comment and defend my site and writing to the death. And, as I said before, this is exactly what they are counting on. Luckily, Mama didn’t raise no fool and I was able to see through the BS to get to the bottom of the actual comment origins.

Just a Heads-Up

So, in closing, just as a heads-up be on the lookout for this style of comment spam. Don’t get caught up in the emotions of the comment and make sure you take a look at the who’s posting it.

Warning! Flying off handle in progress…

Spammers are relentless, this is a known fact. They take no prisoners and are the scum of the earth.

In there latest attempts I continue to get emails titled “Thought Regarding Your Website”. The last “thought” I received was from a spammer pseudo-named Brett Babb using the email address of backyjack27@gmail.com. Come on guy, if you are going to spam at least choose a more professional email address…

Then the message is a complete brain deuce of drivel – “Do you wish you could increase your online leads? We have helped a lot of businesses thrive in this market and we can help you! Simply hit reply and I’ll share with you the cost and the benefits.”

I could continue down the path that I normally take with these posts and [ever so gently] insert my foot in your ass for being a lowly, P.O.S. spammer. However, I would like to ask…

Are business owners actually converting based on these emails?

I know it is some shocking number of times that these emails actually work and I would like to pass the buck of blame on to the organizations that are supposed to be looking out for the best interests of business owners.

I mean if AmEx Open Forum wanted to do something responsible for the business community, how about ONE post about these spam emails warning business owners of their true intentions. That would send some pretty big waves throughout the web that business owners could not miss and start to bring about the end of these stupid, stupid emails.

How would it end them you ask? Well, I am glad you asked!

Well once business owners are privy to these morons behind the emails they will stop inquiring and being doped into about their services. BAM! Done!

So, as much as I am calling out Open Forum, this does not solely rest on their shoulders and nor should it. But, if they were to start some sort of spam awareness initiative targeted directly at business owners that would be AWESOME. Once the business owners are educated, the spammers will stop making money then we can go about our lives spam [not in the can] free.

Thoughts below. Thanks!

On July 21st, I posted about a pretty aggressive SEO contact/comment spammer who had recently changed their name but not their email address. Read it here: http://www.matthewsdiehl.com/deal-with-it/dear-janice-jacobsen/.

I just wanted to share with everyone the results of that post. Here is a screenshot of the traffic that has been generated from organic searches on the spammers pseudoname:

75 visits may not be a large number per se but it does show that as the spammer continues to contact website owners they are hitting the search engines to research the fictitious commenter. Additionally, people who are being contacted by the spammer and finding my post are leaving comments. They are thanking me for empowering them with information before they potentially could have wound-up a victim of a scammer.

The SEM industry has for a long time been a self-policing industry, calling them as we see them, but it does pay off. A better informed clientèle does not hurt us especially when we are informing them about the bad guys who should be avoided.

So, when you contacted by or become aware of a scammer/spammer/asshat who is damaging the reputation of the SEM industry, call them out because we are the only ones who can help a potentially unsuspecting website owner.

When I read the Everfluxx posting on Google Notebook Spam (Sphinn Post – Everfluxx Blog) it reminded me of something I stumbled across months ago in the Yahoo! index. So, I decided to revisit the situation and see if Yahoo! was still ranking a Google Notebook spam page on the first page of it’s search results for the keyword phrase “arizona golf vacations”. Low and behold – it is still there and ranked at #6! Check it out:

If you visit the Notebook page you can click on the user name and see the extensive list of spam Notebook pages created. They are all single notebook pages with links to parked domains with landing page advertising.

Shame on Google for not picking up on this. Especially considering the account has been spamming since October 2007.

Double Shame on Yahoo! for even allowing this page to be included in their index.

Triple Shame on Yahoo! for even allowing it to rank 6th.
