Dear Janice Jacobsen,

Thank you for contacting… wait a minute… your email address looks awfully familiar. Where have I seen that before…

I know! It’s the same damn email address that a previous spammer, named Jim Guthrie, used on my blog just 2 months ago. Go ahead everyone, compare the two…

Wow! Jim, or is it Janice now?, either way you are still a dirty spammer that continues to try and peddle your “SEO services” through comment and form spamming. Oh yes, I (again) checked to see if I could find out more about you and again you left a comment and contact trail all across the Internet.

*Tadah* –

Your continued efforts are lack luster, at best. As you continue to spam legitimate SEO sites (which is just stupid) your shady business practices will continue to become more apparent to a wider audience.

My previous post to you, Jim or Janice, has already helped to inform one small business owner of your sticky web of deceit and hopefully this post will continue to raise awareness.

Your continued usage of comment and contact form spam is just as confusing as your gender!

Give it a rest already, stop dragging our industry through the mud and drawing negative sentiment from business owners that would benefit from SEO but are now left with a poor perception of a legitimate marketing tactic. You continue to push buttons and by doing so continue to draw unwanted attention to the parent organization that you are linked with [full details here].

Just cut the bullshit.

GFY,

Matthew Diehl

P.S. I await (on pins and needles) your gender decision, pre-op and post-op photos would be great too!

I have been waiting to be in the right mood to write this post and I have achieved it through musical inspiration via the Blip.fm Rammstein Channel!

If you haven’t already read my “open letter” post to a fictitious SEO spammer named Jim Guthrie operating as an agent for National Positions, please do so then you can begin to grasp my angst toward the bottom feeders that have spawned ad nauseum in our industry.

Lets add another one to that list right now…

This one goes out to a guy named Jim Phillips who runs Second Effort and claims to be Southwest Florida’s #1 SEO Specialist & Internet Marketing Source. Holy shit… #1 in SW Florida, this guy must be good!

Anyways, here the “gift” that Jim so graciously left as a comment on my site:

Abso-fucking-lutely brilliant! How come I didn’t think of this… a link to your site from a blog comment on a page about SEO with the link text being “seo search engine optimization”. Google is going to love this! – is what I would have said to Jim except that this is the year 2010 and shitty comment links like the one you just submitted to my blog don’t do shit unless your goal was to piss me off (in the latter case you succeeded).

Are you seriously the liason for our industry in Southwest Florida? I am worried for that region if that is the case and the fact that the best work that you can do is spam the comments on my blog in a miserable attempt to scrape together any form of link to your site. I almost wanted to take pity on you (and not write this post) because the attempt was so obviously going to be a failure. How in the hell did you ever think I was going to let that comment go live? You’re delusional at best if that is what you thought.

Oh, and Jim, buddy, your machismo is hanging out…

(photo courtesy of Second Effort website)

In closing, Southwest Florida and potential customers that “come from as far away as downtown New York City, to Pennsylvania, to California, to South Dakota, and more” (quote from Second Effort website) be very careful whenever your hear from Jim Phillips at Second Effort. He clearly is not head of the class when it comes to simple SEO concepts.

P.S. downtown New York City is Manhattan for anyone who couldn’t decipher that

Dear Jim Guthrie,

Thank you for your contact form spam but, honestly, are you some kind of complete idiot?

This is a blog about search engine marketing and mostly SEO. So, if I really wanted it to rank I would have look no further than myself for help with the website.

It is time to reconsider you client acquisition strategy when you are trying to persuade other SEOs to give you work. This must be the most idiotic email I have ever received. See below:

Also, way to send me a personalized message really proving that you are a hard working SEO when I can find your exact same massage as comment spam on other websites.

You are exactly the type of “SEO professional” that gives our industry a tarnished reputation. Do everyone a favor and just stop! Don’t just stop the emails, stop attempting to be something you are clearly not.

That is all.

Matthew Diehl

P.S. Get a fucking clue.

I swear, if hear or see one more person from the SEO industry use the words “free” and “SEO” in this format – “SEO is Free” – I am going to lose it (Actually, I think I am losing it right now).

Lets get this straight: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE SEO!

Can I make it any more clear?

SEO is not free and never will be free. There are these two things called time and money that make it not free. These are the costs of SEO for every single website whether you hire an SEO consultant or if you are going diy.

The phrase “SEO is Free” just makes you sound like an asshat. This is what gets our industry in trouble. This is why Danny Sullivan has to defend SEO against morons who call us spammers, evildoers and opportunitsts.

So this is me saying – Knock it off already. Don’t make me pull this blog over, come back there and seperate you from the idea that saying “SEO is Free” is acceptable.

Also, don’t give me this bullshit about what you actually mean is that SEO is free in that fact that you can get better ROI over the long run. Then just say that and don’t say SEO is Free!

The value of SEO as a high ROI online marketing method has been proven again and again. Companies would not be buying it if it was not delivering them value. We do not ever need to pitch an organization for SEO saying that it is Free. We are so beyond this and it is time to wipe it from our vernacular.

In closing, just stop. Seriously, stop.

As SEOs we run into many types of clients. Some are great and some are not so great. One of the worst is the unmotivated client.

You know, the client that you email and get no email back or you call and get no call back. This can get very old, very fast but remaining attentive to the project is critical to keeping your clients happy. Even though they many not be responding, you NEVER want to be in a situation where your non-communication gets thrown right back in your face.

So, here are a few things you can do to keep you unmotivated client projects on-track and on-time.

Email … Contantly!
This is a continued barrage of emails that makes your presence known. You will find yourself wanting to stop but keep on going. After days or weeks of emails the client will finally get the point and either follow through on their end or commit to when they will have the work done by.

CC Your Boss AND Their Boss
This is a passive aggressive scare tactic but it works.

No one wants their boss to know that they are dropping the ball on something that is important to the success of their website. Nor, do they want their boss to potentially get a call from your boss about the status of the project and have to report on all the past due items on their desk.

Assign Deadlines
This can either be done with a project timeline layed out early on or off the cuff as approval/reviews are needed. Most people require deadlines because it forces accountability for their portion of the project to be on-time. If they can not follow through by assigned dates it is easy to see where the fault lies.

Stress the Importance
You can potentially do two things here:

re-stress the business case for why search is important to the client’s business

stress that without their input the project is at a halt

Both or either of these friendly reminders should do the trick to keep any client on track.

Call Them to Get Commitments
Ahhh such a novel idea – pick up the phone! With this you could catch them off gaurd and there is no way for them to dodge your request. So, get the commitment you need out of them that will get you what you need for your project.

Last Ditch Ultimatums
I hate this one but sometimes you have to bring out the big guns.

Here you will let the client know that they have exceeded the acceptable time length that you can wait for a response and you will now continue forward with the project with or without their input. I like to give them one last chance by assigning a date when the ultimatum takes effect, say another week or few days out.

Finally, you could always threaten to get Jasper involved….. you don’t want to get Jasper involved.

How have you been able to motivate the unmotivated client? Any other tactics you could share would be appreciated!
