Bing is the “rising star” in the US search engine market. Microsoft’s revamped search engine that launched in 2009 and replaced their existing Live search engine has been slowly adding market share, gaining on rival engines Google and Yahoo!. However, this will all change as Microsoft Bing continues to push forward to two key “Powered by Bing” partnerships.

The first of these, that is widely publicized, is their partnership with Yahoo!. This deal, which has recently been approved by the US government, has Yahoo! stepping out of the search engine business and relinquishing their search results pages to Bing. Even though searches will still be conducted on Yahoo! the results will be from Bing (both organic and paid). This Powered by Bing partnership is slated to take effect during 2010 before the holiday season at the end of the year (US only). This move will give Bing an immediate ~150% increase in search engine market share in the US.

The second of these is there partnership with Facebook. Microsoft has had a minority share in the company since 2007 and has began powering Facebook’s “search the web” functionality since 2008 (then with Live and now with Bing). This partnership will be another key element in the search market share as Facebook continues to grow it’s search numbers. In January 2010, Facebook had 395 million search queries performed by Facebook users. So, lets roll that up into Bing as well since they are powering Facebook. This adds another 25% increase in search volume for Bing.

Now lets take a look at the numbers: when you add Bing’s partnerships with Yahoo! and Facebook to its meek 10 to 12% market share it quickly jumps to somewhere in the 25 to 30% range.

So, have you been preparing and grooming you Bing results to take advantage of this?

If you are currently monitoring positions in Yahoo! vs Bing and Bing is outperforming Yahoo! results you may be in good shape as this partnership takes affect. However, if you are on the other side of the spectrum then you are only lining your site up for a potential catastrophic failure when the search results change. For those of you who are not monitoring Bing at all, now is not a bad time to get started!

Here are a couple places that you might want to start reading to get information on the Bing search engine:
Bing Webmaster Center Blog (especially their SEM 101 series)
Webmaster World – Bing Search News

Get to work!

This may or may not be a new topic for some people but this helps to provide concrete proof the usage of keywords in your domain name and URL have an impact on the Bing ranking algorithm.

Courtesy of the SEODojo’s Patent Alerts Microsoft has a new patent called “Determining relevance of documents to a query based on identifier distance“.

The title isn’t very descriptive but the patent outlines how keywords in the URL have an impact on the relevance of a document to a search query. So, if keywords in the URL make your document more relevant it will also have a positive impact on your rankings. Also, by “in the URL” this covers the usage of keywords in the domain name as well. Here is how Microsoft spells it out in the patent:

Some techniques for determining the relevance of a web page to a query factor in whether a query term matches a URL term of the URL of a web page. For example, if a query is “USPTO news,” then these techniques may indicate that the web page with the URL of “www.uspto.gov” and the web page with the URL of “www.uspto.gov/news” are more relevant to the query than a web page with the same content but with a URL that did not match a query term.

Going beyond just the general usage of the keywords in a domain name or URL, Microsoft also discloses that the “depth” of the placement of the keywords also has an impact on relevance.

The URL depth priors technique assigns different relevance probabilities based on the URL type. The URL types are ROOT, SUBROOT, PATH, and FILE.

They have also defined a scoring metric to help apply importance to the appearance of keywords in a URL.

The relevance system uses four match types: 0, 1, 2, and no match. A URL match type of 0 indicates that the distance between the URL depth and the URL match depth is 0 meaning that a URL term match occurs in the last level of the URL. A URL match type of 1 indicates that the deepest URL term match occurs in the second to the last level of the URL. A URL match type of 2 indicates that the deepest URL term match occurs at a level other than the last two levels. A URL match type of no match indicates that no URL term matches a query term. For example, the query “wireless communication” matches the URL “cio.doe.gov/wireless/wwg/wwg_index.htm” with a URL match type of 2, matches the URL “cio.doe.gov/wireless/” with a URL match type of 0, and does not match the URL “cio.doe.gov” so its URL match type is no match.

Based on this information you can easily come up with your own grading system to analyze your domain and URLs for their effectiveness on your rankings in the Bing search engine.

Outside of being a search engine, the new Bing “decision engine” helps you make informed decsions in 4 main categories – Local, Shopping, Travel & Health.

Here are 10 tips on Decision Engine Optimization (DEO) and how to utilize Bing to the fullest:

Focus on keyword research & development and incorporating them into Title & Description tags (source: Bing SEM 101)

Use a keyword-rich domain name for your website (ex. Travel)

Optimize internal link text with keywords as Bing Sitelinks use this exclusively (avoid “click here” link text at all costs)

Improve your image search results by using keywords in image alt attributes

Tag video with descriptive keywords for better video inclusion

E-commerce sites should add or improve the use of consumer product review features

Double check your listings (or add a listing) in these 3 main local review sites: Yelp, CitySearch and JudysBook

Make sure you have a business listing with Bing Local Listings Center for inclusion in Bing Maps (you can include a wealth of information on you business in the listing)

Include a contact footer (email, phone, address) on every page of the site. Bing favors this information for their QuickPreview feature and can help locals find you.

If you are a news site, get your news feed into Bing’s local news feed. They are currently manually reviewing every feed before inclusion so submit it to bns@microsoft.com

Just before the launch of the Bing decision engine from Microsoft, Rick DeJarnette, a member of the Microsoft Webmaster Center Team, announced a new series of community posted geared toward website owners (diy seo) and search engine marketing professionals. Basically, the new series runs under this pretense:

“We know you are going to be performing search engine optimization (SEO) to try and rank higher in our decision engine, so here are the criteria you need to follow and we won’t ban you for doing something stupid, stupid!”

In coordination with the new series of blog posts, they also launched a forum for members to share ideas and strategies of what works and what doesn’t. Good or bad advice, always take it with a grain of salt…

However, the Webmaster Center team has already had a series of posted outlining some detailed criteria you need to begin optimizing you website. So, straight from the horses mouth to you here is a summary of the key items you should be working on:

Step 1: Selecting Keyword Phrases

Brainstorm your keyword phrases, come up with as many as possible

Use the adCenter Excel Add-in Keyword Research Tool to research these and additional keyword phrases

Select keyword phrases (not individual keywords) that convert – meaning keyword phrases that deliver targeted visitors that drive your business

Leave out “jargon” terms only your current customers would use

Select at least a few unique phrase per page that contains content

Identify relevant niches

Develop a theme for your site with the keyword phrases

Step 2: On-page Keyword Placement

Emphasize your keywords in the following tags:

Title Tag

Place important keywords at beginning of tag

Suggested length: 5 to 65 characters

Unique Title text for every page

!Avoid the following special characters: ‘”<>{}[]()

Body Header Tags

Anchor Tags (links)

Description META Tag

Create a unique description for each page utilizing keyword phrases

Suggested length: 25 to 150 characters

!Avoid reusing title tag text as a description

!Avoid the following special characters: ‘”<>{}[]()
